The persons, who have one extra chromosome when compared with that of normal 46 chromosomes, are said to be affected with Down syndrome. It is also called Trisomy 21. This extra genetic material will cause serious consequences in the development of body and brain of the individual.
The disorder of Down syndrome is caused by birth. In other words heredity is the only factor which causes this disorder. The individuals inherit the genes from their parents or forefathers and will develop with remarkable features.
The symptoms vary widely from one individual to other. The head will be smaller than the regular size and will look abnormal. It may have a round shape in the front and flat shape at the back. The corner of the eyes will be rounded and sometimes you will find the eyes are slanted or inclined upwards. In the neck portion you will find excess of skin growth. They would have rather flat nose than pointed one and the ears and mouth are small. Their hands and legs will be smaller than normal size. The physical development of the child will be delayed and very often Down syndrome children will have retarded mental development. Their judgment skills are very poor and they cannot concentrate on any particular thing.
In many cases children with Down syndrome would have congenital heart problems such as septal defect, associated with eye and ear problems. The assortment of teeth may cause problem in chewing. Overall they are underactive or overactive due to imbalance in thyroid hormone.
The doctor will identify the child on seeing the baby and may ask the parent to do a blood test for confirming the presence of extra chromosome.

Since it is genetic disorder it cannot be cured or removed completely. The child may be taught coping with the disorder by behavioral training and therapy. However some problems like gastrointestinal block and septal defects in the heart can be corrected by surgery. Necessary physiotherapy and speech therapy are given for the children so that they can carry on daily activities without any support.
