Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a condition in which there will be tenderness in muscles, joints and tendons of your body. It is a chronic disorder and takes long time to heal and may cause various other problems like fatigue and depression on the affected person. There may be pain on the entire body from joints to joints thus making life more difficult. It can produce various complications like sleeping sickness and severe headache and anxiety related disorder when not cured for long term.

Causes :

Some of the factors which trigger fibromyalgia are physical stress, emotional stress, pain in the abdomen, change in sleeping patterns and viral infection. Although it affects both sexes, women are more prone to fibromyalgia than men for unknown reasons. This disorder hits women who are in the age group of 25-50.

Symptoms :

Initially it may start as low back pain or chronic pain in the joints, but slowly it progresses to other muscles, tendons and soft tissues of the body thereby making it very difficult. Depression, chronic pain in the neck, fatigue, Lyme disease and difficulty in sleeping are some of the common symptoms of this disorder.

Intense pain is the major symptom to diagnose this disease and the intensity of pain varies from one individual to other. Tender joints like neck, shoulders, lower back, hips, chest, elbows are worst affected by pain and the pain may be felt like a deep burning pain for some people. Every morning it is quite common for the affected person to wake-up with severe joint pain and stiffness.

The pain may become tolerable during daytime but again it may worsen at night.

The pain becomes very intense when you live in cold countries and work on cold water. The pain may aggravate when you get emotionally disturbed. Some people may also complain of having difficulty in bowel movement, numbness in hands and feet and memory problems. Extreme tiredness and fatigue are quite common with this disorder.

Diagnoses :

Your doctor may examine your body for widespread pain in knees, arms, buttocks, thighs and shoulders for prolonged time. There are 11-18 areas that will have extended pain when you are getting fibromyalgia.

Treatment :

Treatment involves combination of physiotherapy and exercise programs with relaxation techniques. In severe cases, you may be given muscle relaxant or anti-depressive drugs. The purpose of treatment is to address the symptoms and to ease out the pain in the affected person.

Strong medicines like pregabalin, duloxetine and minacipran are given for controlling pain.

Depending on the intensity of illness and health condition of the patients, your doctor may also prescribe anti seizure medicines, pain relievers, sleeping pills and muscle relaxants.

Behavioral therapy is administered for dealing with patients who cannot cope with intense pain. The counselors will make you realize the pain causing symptoms and involve you in more interesting activities to forget pain.

Prevention :

It is difficult to prevent fibromyalgia since it affects people for unknown reasons. By eating a balanced diet and practicing regular exercises and by controlling body weight, you can avoid getting this disorder. Since it is a chronic disorder, the affected person should understand the symptoms and learn to live with it.
