Medically called as Cholecystitis, gallbladder stones or bile duct stones is really safe and does not have any risks, if the surgery is performed on elective basis. If Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) is performed on emergency basis, the rate of mortality is high.

Gallbladder is a small pear shaped organ located beneath the stomach. Though it does not have any responsible function for digestion, it helps in digestion of fat particles.

Symptoms :

Most of the cases of gall stones are asymptomatic (without any symptoms) and only 2% of the affected people have pain in their stomach. It takes more than 10 years for the first symptom to appear. There are three types of gall-stones and accordingly the symptoms also vary.

Biliary pain : There will be non-stop pain in the middle of right abdomen just above the rib cage. For some people, the pain is followed by vomiting and nausea. Using pain relievers may provide only temporary relief. The pain may be triggered on taking a hefty meal. Other symptoms of biliary pain are bloating, regurgitation, heartburn and indigestive problems.

Acute Calculous : About 1-3% with gallstones develop moderate to severe inflammation in the gallbladder region, thus blocking the duct. Pain may last for days together and even for weeks. Patients complain of having intense pain when they draw a deep breath. Some of them may have fever and chills subsequently.

Chronic Cholecystitis : People with this type of stone may have discomfort after taking meals. They would suffer from gas problem and chronic diarrhea. In case stones are present in common bile-duct the individuals may get affected with jaundice, rapid heartbeat and drop in blood pressure, fever, nausea, vomiting and intense pain.

It is necessary to seek medical care if the pain persists in the right abdomen and continues after taking meals.

Diagnoses :

Gallstones can be identified by taking lipid profile test and liver function test of the affected person.

Causes :

Gallstones occur when there is infection in the bilary duct or bile tube. People who have hypothyroidism can easily get gallstone. Since it slows the entire metabolism, digestion cannot happen as expected which may lead to formation of more stones. Food allergy is yet another cause for gallstone formation.

Prognosis :

There may be some complications if the surgery is performed for bile duct removal. And complication is expected if acute cholecystitis develops into an infection. There is chance for death if the infection spreads to other parts of the body (septicemia) and immediate surgery is to be done. The affected person may have rapid heartbeat, confusion of thoughts and fast breathing.

It may give rise to gallbladder cancer and symptoms are not evident, unless the disease progresses to advance stage.

Prevention :

Reduce the intake of high fatty foods and increase foods that contain monounsaturated fats. People who take high quantity of fibrous fruits have low risk of gallstone formation. Include peanuts and walnuts in your daily diet to control gallstone. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and veggies which lower and clear the gallstone found in the gallbladder.

Treatment :

Medically gallstones can be treated and controlled by giving appropriate drugs. Most of the cases can be treated well with diet changes and by making lifestyle modification. In some cases of infection and acute cholecystitis surgery is done. Now many doctors prefer to perform Laparoscopy instead of open procedure for removing gallbladder from the body.
